9 de Julio Avenue
This is the greatest artery of Buenos Aires, renowned because with more than 140 m wide it is reportedly the world’s widest avenue.
The Obelisco
This monument is situated between Corrientes Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue it’s the symbol of Buenos Aires and where was raised the Argentina flag for the very first time.
The Colon Theatre
The theatre is considered one of the world’s most famous theatres, with its monumental architectonic structure of Italian Renaissance style and French neoclassical ornamentation was inaugurated on May 25th, 1908 with the opera “Aida”, by Verdi. With an impressive schedule that includes opera and ballet performances. It has reached international level because of the repertoires and performers that are usually acclaimed in its outstanding hall, which has an exceptional acoustics and a capacity of over 3,000 people. The theatre is on a same level as those great, internationally revered musical temples as Milan’s Scala; the metropolitan Opera house in New York and the New Theatre in Tokyo.
May Square
The square is the former main square of Buenos Aires, established by Juan de Garay on June 11th, 1580, when he founded the city. A witness to the most relevant historic and civic events, it is today the place where the most significant political activities and social demonstrations take place. It is surrounded by symbolic buildings such as the Cabildo (former city hall), the Cathedral, and the Casa Rosada (official home and workplace of the President of Argentina). Also, right on the centre of the square you will find the May Pyramid, which commemorates the May Revolution of 1810.
The May Avenue
With beautiful buildings of different architectural styles the May Avenue (Avenida de Mayo), connects the Casa Rosada, official home and workplace of the President of Argentina, with the Congress Palace. If you walk along this avenue —a Spanish stronghold and testimony of the city of early 20th century— you will bump into the Tortoni Café, that since 1858 it’s the oldest literary café in town, where tango and jazz shows are performed at night.
Congress Square
This is the point of the city that indicates the starting point of all national routes. Here you can find the monument of the Two Congresses and the National Congress which houses the Senate and the House of Representatives.
