Bariloche
San Carlos de Bariloche is located 1607km from Buenos Aires on the southern shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake in the province of Río Negro, within the national park of the same name.
The name of the town is a combination of two names: Vuriloche, mountains pass south of Mount
Tronador discovered by a Jesuit, which a late 19th century printing error recorded as Bariloche; and the name of the German businessman who built the first house in the area in 1895, Don Carlos Wiederhold, which was mistakenly registered as San Carlos. On May 3, 1902, a presidential decree officially founded the settlement called San Carlos de Bariloche.
Bariloche is the gateway to a spectacular region of lakes, rivers, lush vegetation, snowfields and snow-capped peaks. The mass of humid air that blows into the region and snowfall, creating the perfect environment for dense forest and ski resorts.
The city stands out for its architectural features and for being located in a privileged region due to the beauty of its landscapes. It is one of the most populated cities in the province and one of the most important tourist centres in Argentina.
Its characteristic architecture consists of buildings made from stones and wood with slated gabled roofs, which give the city a very special physiognomy. Among the most outstanding groups we can mention the Civic Centre, seat of the main official organisms.
Within the centre arteries there are varied shops and commercial shop centres, cafeterias, and restaurants. The city also has an important busy night life.

Bariloche is a city/area to be enjoyed all the year long. In the spring and summer seasons, it is ideal for carrying out all kinds of excursions and outdoor activities; in winter, the snow offers a singular panorama, including the skiing spectacle in one of the most important Argentine centres for the practice of this sport in South America: Mount Cathedral. Within this frame, there exists the famous Fiesta Nacional de la Nieve (Snow National Celebration) which constitutes a truly international sporting, artistic and social event.
The regional chocolates, in any of its numerous varieties are the mostly appreciated souvenirs for all tourists. In some shops you can see the way they are elaborated. The marmalades elaboration made of regional fine fruits also stand out.
San Carlos de Bariloche comprises a tourist infrastructure and equipment service in accordance with its importance, offering lodging and gastronomic establishments for all levels.
This beautiful region has offers year-round activities such as skiing, salmon fishing, big game hunting, trekking and mountaineering. The most important attractions are Lago Nahuel Huapi, Isla Victoria, Bosque Arrayanes (forest) and the crossing of the Andes to Chile through the lakes.
